K.S. Art is proud to present this exhibition by Joanne Greenbaum, that is concurrent with a presentation of new paintings at D'Amelio Terras.
Known for her innovative abstractions that demand extreme concentration and physical control, Greenbaum continues to challenge the possibilities of drawing while exploring systems of structural disjunction. Using her surfaces as a projection of sight, she transforms her subject matter into complex and highly associative creations that involve interlocking boxes, staggering lines, spirals, squares and circles.
Presented on the plain background of the paper, the work speaks to the freedom of form. While Greenbaum's drawing practice incorporates the use of many mediums, A Message for the Odd Ball features recent gouaches that apply a simplified color scheme. Here, Greenbaum succeeds in fusing the interplay of the various visual elements into flattened web-like arrangements, which begin to look like images of sculptures.
In 2003, Joanne Greenbaum was the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation grant to work at the Bellagio Study Center in Lake Como, Italy, and resident artist on the faculty of the Skowhegan School of painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited extensively in the United States, as well as in London, Paris and Switzerland. She lives and works in New York City.
