In what amounts to a small scale survey of work featuring colored pencil as primary material, K S Art is proud to present the work of 69 artists. Like graphite pure and simple, or its cousin the ballpoint pen, colored pencil is a medium whose advocates are many and whose aesthetic results are wildly various. This show captures the range, from delicate and feathery figurative line to dense and hard-pressed saturation, from abstract exuberance to cooly calculated hard-edge constructivism, among other indescribable and specific solutions.
Hanging the work of contemporary artists cheek by jowl with beautiful examples of outsider art, this exhibition draws attention to issues of self-consciousness and freedom, all the while celebrating fact and fancy: Art's an inexhaustible arena for inventive mark-making. "Colored Pencil" invites the viewer to consider what is shared by these artists, as well as marvel at what is unique to each practitioner.
