Group exhibitions are typically organized according to a theme, suggesting a larger, generalized idea or concept based on "likeness" or "similarity" of works. SPACE BETWEEN THE SPOKES, conversely, is anti-thematic, organized instead according to contrasts and differences between works, each of which ultimately points towards the specificity and singularity of each piece. What is emphasized is the role of the viewer in finding--or not finding--connections in works, but also in the space between.
SPACE BETWEEN THE SPOKES includes a single work by 18 artists, employing different mediums and different aesthetic strategies: painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, collage, and video, etc. In a world of increasing homogenization, the variety of this exhibition attempts to celebrate the particular and the specific in art. It also strives to evoke the elements of spontaneity, idiosyncrasy and surprise.
The artists in SPACE BETWEEN THE SPOKES are: Pearl Blauvelt, Ian Cooper & Jacob Dyrenforth, Daniella Dooling, Cheryl Donegan, David Diao, Elk, John Evans, Martha Friedman, Lance Goldsmith, Joanne Greenbaum, Selma Hafizovic, Nico Ihlein, Les LeVeque, Jay King & Mario Diaz de Leon, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Sally Ross, Molly Smith and Judy Stevens.
