This exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Bill Adams reveals his continuing investigation of the relationship between paint and image. His paintings which are made on coarse linen and range up to eight feet high, represent the heads of men and women in economical lines rendered, seemingly, with swift gestures, and greatly enlarged to colossal effect.
In these sensuously layered works, the figurative elements are interwoven with painterly, abstract shapes and gestural strokes. This creates a complex interplay of materials, forms and imagery: animated material, on the one hand and, on the other, materialized animation.
In his works on paper, Adams envisions a parallel universe of the imagination in which ordinary objects like coffee mugs and flowerpots have faces and seem imbued with human consciousness.
Bill Adams lives and works in New York. This is his fifth solo show with the gallery, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2012.
