"Maintaining Sanity" presents 147 works by 13 artists for whom daily, serial artmaking serves to promote psychic equilibrium, something we all could use more of in these crazy-making times.
Notably, series by 11 of the artists are installed vertically on the gallery walls from near-floor to near-ceiling. Two sets of three-dimensional objects are displayed on long, low pedestals that echo the vertically hung works. This unconventional installation promotes a way of looking and seeing different from the usual hanging of serial works in grids or in eye-level horizontals, and it creates a unifying structure of relationships between many disparate and idiosyncratic styles and modes of production. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, collages, ceramics, sculpture and photographic pieces. Whatever their differences, all of these artists are busily working every day to maintain sanity.
